Reception Platforms



Reception platforms: methods of programme distribution to audience; (terrestrial, satellite, internet, streaming, on demand, listen again, podcasting, blogging) cable; mobile phone


1.       Reception Platforms

Relates to how we listen or receive our radio.
Describe what terrestrial reception is?(AERIAL)  Basically in order to receive radio signals we need an aerial, (Usually a TV aerial) to receive he signals and convert them to audio through our stereo in the home or in a car stereo.
What is satellite reception? (DISH) Basically a radio signal is beamed to a satellite in space which then sends the signal to all homes with a subscription and a satellite receiver dish.  In the UK this usually means your SKY dish but there are others which receive foreign channels.

Describe how radio has changed for the listener and how we can now listen to or receive radio.  Mention the following;

Televisions (Freeview, sky etc)

The way radio has been accessed has changed over the years, from old AM radio sets to the digital technologies of today. The wide range of ways that it can be listened to means that it can reach more people and gather a larger audience.

To be listened to, radios firstly need to be picked up by some form of platform technology. These can vary depending on the item being used and are typically a satellite dish or an aerial. A typical radio set will pick up AM or FM radio waves and convert them into the audio we hear. An AM radio will usually do this through a small metal wire which acts as an antennae in the system and picks up the thousands of waves that are being transmitted. A tuner then selects the desired wave from the rest and a detector then isolates the audio out of that wave. The sound is then amplified, so it is audible.

Other radios need a larger aerial, which will pick up the radio waves for the system. Radio stations which broadcast in the form of audio-only channels on television will use TV aerials ,as they will be broadcasting digitally through it along with TV channels. Radio is also accessible from a car. An aerial is usually situated on the outside, where it will pick up radio waves and convert them to audio, which will be emitted out of the speakers. When a car goes under a bridge, some radios will falter due to the barrier restricting radio waves. Aerials are sometimes fixed in position but are commonly movable, so the best possible reception is gathered. Aerials around the home and in the car are terrestrial receivers, as they pick up radio waves from a huge antenna from which the radio station is broadcasting.

Another way of receiving a radio broadcast is through satellite reception. This is where the radio signals are beamed to a satellite in space and are then sent to homes with a satellite dish and their appropriate subscriptions. As satellite dishes are situated outside they are more susceptible to weather and other environmental factors such as trees. A common subscription-based set is SKY. This also regularly uses a satellite dish, though it can sometimes be watched over the internet. Other satellite dishes can be bought, which also pick up channels and stations from other countries.

A typical sky satellite dish. This will be placed outside the home, on the side or on the roof. As it is part of a subscription based package, only their designated dishes will pick up their signals.







Other television sets can play radio stations, such as Freeview and Freesat. The stations will broadcast digitally along with the television channels.

Many radio's can be listened to over a computer, via an internet connection. Radio stations can directly stream music or video over the internet in 'real time' basically meaning it is live and there are no files to download and listen too later. The continuous stream of data may stop due to internet congestion or slow broadband so it will buffer. Buffering is where some of the data is stored in the PC to be used when broadband is slow.

On-demand radio is a form of listen again, where you can browse through a selected amount of content and play shows that have already ceased broadcasting.  Usually the content is from the past 7 days but, it can be from months and even years ago depending on the website and radio station.


BBC iPlayer is the BBC's on demand service, catering for both television and radio.



A listener may also get their content from a third party source. Some radio stations allow their web links to be embedded into a blog, so followers of that particular blog can follow the link and listen to the radio. Alternatively, videos can be embedded in the form of audio only content from another website, such as YouTube. This method is popular for people who wish to listen to older broadcasts.

Tablets and phones can directly connect to the internet with 3G and WiFi  so radio can be accessible to them via streaming.  Some radio stations also have Apps, which can be downloaded and then listened to through the app. Podcasts are commonly found in app stores, as they are usually of an episodic nature and are found in series. As podcasts are a form of listen again and have already been downloaded to the device, no internet connection is required to listen to them. Some older mobile phones without 3G can still listen to radio, as the earphones/headphones being used act as an antenna.


Distribution Technologies

    Radio station’s get their content to listeners through many different methods. To broadcast live a huge aerial is typically used, situated in or around the location of the radio station. There are two waves an analogue radio station broadcasts on; FM and AM. An AM transmits over a longer distance than FM and may require less power. Due to the shorter range of FM, more than one aerial may be required to cover a certain boundary. BBC radio stations may use larger aerials to cover certain regions (for example, BBC Manchester) while independent local radio stations may use smaller less powerful aerials (Salford City Radio). Alternatively, a station may broadcast its content digitally, through DAB. Some stations will only cover one area, so as you move further away, the signal will break up and deteriorate before it ceases broadcasting to your device. However a national radio station will have aerials mounted at various points around the country, so it won’t stop broadcasting.

    Some radio stations have ‘listen again’ technology which is a catch up service for missed programming. The BBC’s version of this is its ‘iPlayer’ function. A media player with a library of past shows, it allows people to listen to content that has finished broadcasting, usually for a varying period after. Television also uses this method, allowing people to watch programmes and some T.V films for 7 days after, free of charge. BBC iPlayer’s radio service ranges from morning shows on Radio 1 to comedies and readings on Radio 4. iPlayer also allows people to download programmes onto a tablet or device, so they can watch it anytime and anywhere for seven days. 

    A form of listen again is  a ‘podcast’. A derivation of the words broad(cast) and i(Pod) a podcast is a type of media which consists of a series of episodes in the form of audio, video or a PDF file, downloaded or streamed online directly to a computer or portable device. A podcast can be listened to on the go, so this attracts people to download it as they can listen to it via their device anywhere they want. Some podcasts began as radio shows, such as 'The Ricky Gervais Show', which is the most downloaded podcast ever.

Independent companies send their content via broadband, through a secure email system, rather than using a courier to deliver a USB or floppy disc. They will first make their content , such as an advert, jingle or show in their studio or elsewhere. Next they edit it, then save it as an appropriate file that can be accessed by the email recipient. They will then send it to the radio broadcaster who will open the file and save it to their system to be uploaded for broadcast in the future.



Digital Technologies

Over the years radio has been broadcast via many different sources. These range from early short wave radio's to the Internet accessible stations of today. Today, DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is being used more commonly and is thus lessening the use of AM and FM radios across the world. In the UK the government wants a switch-over from analogue to digital radio by 2015, having also done this with television over the last few years. Analogue radio consists of AM and FM radios:


AM broadcasting is where the radio implements amplitude modulation. It was first tested in the 1900's and became popular in 1920's with more wider usage of radio. Amplitude modulation increases and decreases the height of the radio waves, along with the strength, as the base signal changes. However, AM is therefore more susceptible to noise as noise affects amplitude, which in turn affects the carrier wave, where the information is stored.


 AM radio signals can travel great distances, so a single transmitter can cover large areas. AM radio is broadcast over several frequency bands. The allocations of these bands are governed by various radio regulations as well as the country's telecommunication administration. The three bands that it broadcast over are:

Long Wave:  Long wave is used for radio broadcasting in Europe, Africa and Northern and Central Asia and has generally not been allocated elsewhere. Long waves are the same as a low frequency wave. They are named "long" due to the large spaces in between each wave.

Medium Wave: This wave is generally used in the America's and is the most heavily used band for commercial broadcasting.


Short Wave: The short wave band is used for things such as aircraft, police and military radio.Most radio waves can pass through the earth's atmosphere but short waves are "sky waves", which bounce up and down off of the earth's ionosphere en route to it's destination. Other frequencies can do this, which is caused by charged particles in the iosphere.

Here is a typical radio set, which will pick up radiowaves and convert them into the sound we hear. The radio can be tuned to either FM or any of the AM radio waves (SW,MW,LW)



FM Broadcasting is another form of radio transmission. The FM stands for frequency modulation,as rather than the amplitude being changed, the frequency is changed. FM radio was first developed in the United States in the thirties, by Edwin Armstrong.


 FM is less prone to interference than AM and therefore has greater sound quality, due to a higher bandwidth than AM. The BBC first used FM Broadcasting in 1955 and it first took off in the UK during the rise in commercial radio in the 1970's.

the signal is a continuous line that goes up, down and across in straight lines with no curvesDAB digital radio is  a new form of radio broadcasting. Beginning in the 1990's digital radio is a series of pulses in two states: on and off. This is in contrast to analogues wave signals. Rather than having to fine tune the radio to get your desired station, DAB radio's have a ready list of radio stations that they pick up automatically, displaying them by name rather than frequency. This allows the user to scroll through and select the station of their choice.

 DAB has excellent quality, due to it's signals which pick up virtually no outside interference. On certain digital radios you can also pause and rewind, as well as recording shows. 


There are some issues over whether digital radio should replace the old FM and AM radio stations, due to it's costs and only minimal better quality than FM. However, sales of DAB radios have increased significantly in recent years and cars are now commonly being made with digital radios.


Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is a part of DAB technologies, designed to fit over the bands currently used by AM radio. DRM has high quality sound, just like DAB. It has been specifically designed as a high quality replacement for analogue radio.


Freesat and Freeview are digital tv services, launched in 2008 and 2002 respectively. They can be accessed through a satellite dish and have national radio stations among their channel lists, which can be recorded or rewinded.
